その「50年の歴史を持つU字ロック」がこちら「クリプトナイト」。
最初記事を流し読みしただけだったのでU字ロックって家のドアについている10cm位開けたいときのストッパーのことだと思ってました。
なので「クリプトナイト」は"Crypto Night"つまり「夜を暗号化する」って意味かなと思ってました。（ちょっとしゃれた？語源かなと）
そしたら"Kriptonite"だったことに気がついた。

"cryptography（クリプトグラフィ）"の語源はギリシャ語の"kryptos（クリプトス：隠す）"と"graphein（グラペイン：書く）"より。
"cryptography"はあるメッセージを送信者と受信者のみ知るキーにより可逆的な別の形に変えることですが、このメッセージそのものを隠すことを"steganography（ステガノグラフィ）"という。"steganos（ステガノス：被う）"と""graphein"が語源。
つまり第三者に漏れないようにあるメッセージを伝える時に、メッセージの形を変える（"MESSAGE"をアルファベット順で１文字づつずらして"NFTTBHF"にする）のが「クリプトグラフィ」、そのメッセージの書かれた紙を飲み込んでしまう（！）のが「ステガノグラフィ」。
現代ではスパイじゃあるまいし、体内にメッセージを隠す必要はなく、音声や画像のデータにヒミツのメッセージを隠すそうです。
